G.R. Nessenthaler graduated from Old Dominion University with a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy in 1996 and received his Doctorate from Western University in 2008. He has been the Director of Physical Therapy for San Luis Sports Therapy and Orthopedic Rehabilitation’s Arroyo Grande clinic since its inception in 1999. He brings a large body of postgraduate education to his practice, where his specialty is orthopedics. He was certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy for the spine from the McKenzie Institute USA in 2002, and obtained his Orthopedic Clinical Specialist certification from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in 2003. Marlena was born and raised in the Central Coast, living in Santa Maria with Mom, Dad, and older sister Melanie.  She attended St. Joseph High School from 1993-1997, until then departing to Fresno State to play Division 1 soccer and begin the process of becoming a Physical Therapist.  She earned a B.S. in Kinesiology with an Exercise Science option, while working as a P.T aide in a sports therapy clinic.  In 2002, she moved down south to work on her Masters in Physical Therapy at Long Beach State.  She graduated as President of her P.T. class while also working as a Graduate Assistant for her Orthopedics professor. 

Fitness has always been an integral part of Marlena’s life.  She started playing soccer at age 5 and has not stopped yet.  Swimming, hiking, running, and triathlons have become another joy, pretty much anything that gets her outside.  She has taken her admiration and respect for movement and activity to make her treatments as exciting and functional as possible.  Her experience with neuromuscular rehabilitation through internships has led to a well rounded approach to the progression and refinement of movement in Physical Therapy.

Tim was born and raised in Burbank, California the oldest of three. Growing up with his sister and brother, he learned that he wanted to work with people and help them like his mother, who was a nurse and his father, who was a fireman did. After receiving his physical therapy degree, he worked in many areas including in patient rehab, outpatient, acute therapy, aquatics, and home-health physical therapy. He became the clinical supervisor of clinical education at a large hospital. He enjoys working with all patient populations utilizing manual techniques to assist them to move better

After a 20-year Navy career as an Aviation Physiologist, Bob earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree (Physical Therapy Assistant). Bob is a licensed California Physical Therapy Assistant. He has worked in private practice outpatient physical therapy clinics and in a hospital in-patient and transition unit. Bob is also a Certified Health Fitness Instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine and a Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council of Exercise. He is qualified in the ACE Trainer Program to help AARP members lead active, healthier lifestyles.

During his 20-year Naval career Bob conducted and supervised research, development, test and evaluation programs involving Aviation Life Support Systems and Aircrew Physiological Performance. He provided technical guidance in support of physical performance, training, conditioning and testing related issues Navy-wide with an emphasis on Wellness, health promotion, injury prevention and safety. He conducted high-risk aviation and survival training for military aircrews as well as hyperbaric (recompression) training. He taught the Navy’s Fitness Coordinator course world wide. As a Navy Test Parachutist, he had over 100 parachute jumps in support of Navy test and evaluation programs. Many of the jumps supported biomedical research projects evaluating human tolerances to parachute opening shock and the aerospace recovery environment.

Bob, his wife Margy, and daughter Megan, settled in Margy’s hometown of Arroyo Grande. He has participated in various run/walk/cycling events, triathlons, and marathons. He still enjoys being active and enjoys cycling, tennis, surfing and kayaking here on the beautiful Central Coast.

Jason received his bachelor’s in Physical Education with a concentration in Physical Therapy in 1996 from California State University Sacramento. Ryan came to the Central Coast in 1988 and began a career in the Fire Service with the Arroyo Grande Fire Department in 1989 as a volunteer firefighter. After 10 years on the department, and a bout with Hodgkin’s Disease, Ryan returned to school in Orange County to pursue a new career in Physical Therapy. After undergrad in the busy OC Ryan was looking for a change of pace and scenery and decided to go to the Big Sky state of Montana to attain his PT degree. There he graduated with the first entry level class offering the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree on the West Coast. Michael’s primary area of study as well as more than 10 years of practice since graduation has been orthopedics and hand rehabilitation including internships at Yale, City of Hope, Orthopedic Hospital of Los Angeles, and private practice at the Ventura Hand Center before coming to San Luis Obispo County in June of 2004. Patrick "migrated" west to California from Wisconsin in 1989. He graduated with honors from San Jose State University in 1993, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy. In his sixteen years of professional experience, he has worked in a wide variety of therapy settings in San Luis Obispo County; including long-term and transitional care, hospital based inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and home-health therapy. Special areas of interest are neurological rehabilitation, hand and upper extremity therapy. Patrick is the director of the Neuromuscular Retraining program.

Patrick has extensive training and experience, both professionally and personally, in neuromuscular rehabilitation. At the age of 25 he became quadriplegic as a result of a diving injury. After many years of applying the treatment principals to his own rehabilitation that he now teaches his patients, he walks without assistive devices, and has functional use of his hands.

Patrick is a certified level II trained therapist working with the SaeboFlex dynamic splint used to retrain hand function of a stroke or brain injury survivor’s affected hand. He is trained to provide the intensive Constraint Induced Movement Therapy program for stroke survivors.

He designs specific treatment programs to meet the individual needs of each patient. Patrick strongly believes that there is hope for virtually all stroke patients to improve their function, even many years after their stroke occurred.

Patrick enjoys living on the Central Coast, hiking, biking and playing Frisbee with his dogs at the beach!

Tanya has been involved in extensive continuing education for the past few years primarily focusing in orthopedics, geriatrics, sports medicine and women’s health. Currently she is a resident in the Evidence in Motion Orthopedic Residency program and plans to further pursue fellowship training. She is also certified in the APTA Women’s Health Section CAPP program for pelvic pain I involving treatment of incontinence and pelvic floor evaluation and treatment. She is active in her community and seeks to use her continuing education in senior wellness, mentorship programs, and care for the underserved. She enjoys family/friend time, traveling, hiking, back-packing and learning/exploring something new everyday.

Ann Marie Roach is the most recent addition to the Hand Therapy Department at San Luis Sports Therapy and Orthopedic Rehabilitation. She brings a wide range of experience in treatment of upper extremity disorders in multiple settings with over 16 years of practice. Ann Marie has experience while living in the US and also while traveling overseas with the military, working in many fields of physical therapy. Her experience includes but is not limited to, hospital based in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation, in-patient and out-patient wound care, sub-acute, skilled nursing and adult day health care, out-patient private practice and industrial rehabilitation.

Ann Marie grew up on the central coast before leaving for college to pursue a degree in physical therapy. Throughout her career, she has furthered her professional development with extensive continuing education including focus on evidenced based examination and intervention for injuries of the upper extremity and spine. Ann Marie joined the SLST group in January of 2008 and her wide range of experience, attention to detail and eagerness to expand her knowledge make her a valued asset to the Hand Therapy team.

Originally from Cupertino, CA, Jeff’s first exposure to physical therapy came after injuring his knee playing high school basketball. That experience heavily influenced his desire to pursue PT as a career. His professional background has primarily been in the sporting realm however Jeff brings a strong desire to help individuals from all walks of life. His professional goals include progressing in his manual skills and knowledge base, attaining his OCS, receiving his doctoral degree, and of course being a fixture in the community representing San Luis Sports Therapy as the go-to choice for movement therapy. Jason S. Sanders, received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California, and is board certified as a Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. His post graduate work includes extensive industrial medicine, orthopedic, and manual therapy training. He has had the pleasure of directing the rehabilitation of Collegiate All-Americans, Olympians, Amateur and Professional athletes. Though, on a daily basis he enjoys assisting in the rehabilitation of individuals from all walks of life.

When he is not working with patients, Jason enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children. He is an avid sports fan, and actively works with local youth through master’s track and field programs.

Michael is the founder and Director of the Hand Therapy Department at San Luis Sports Therapy. The majority of his time is spent not only treating patients, but also as a mentor/ clinical instructor for staff therapists and interns studying for their specialty Board Exams for Hand Therapy. He regularly attends surgeries to observe the latest and varying techniques used by surgeons today to maintain close and clear communication with the physicians whose patients he treats, in order to maximize his patients’ outcomes. He is also on the clinical development committee of the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency program at San Luis Sports Therapy. He is a board certified specialist in Hand Therapy, the first and only one between Thousand Oaks and San Francisco with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

Michael graduated pre-med with his B.S. in Biology from Fairfield University and subsequently pursued study in the areas of breast and ovarian cancer research where he was twice awarded Edmundson Fellowships for research at the USC Norris Cancer institute. Desiring to bring his health care experience to a field with greater patient interaction, he entered the USC School of Physical Therapy. There he graduated with the first entry level class offering the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree on the West Coast. Michael’s primary area of study as well as more than 10 years of practice since graduation has been orthopedics and hand rehabilitation including internships at Yale, City of Hope, Orthopedic Hospital of Los Angeles, and private practice at the Ventura Hand Center before coming to San Luis Obispo County in June of 2004. On a personal level, having suffered a broken hand while in PT school, he brings his own experience with surgery and hand therapy to bear in the clinic.

David graduated from Loma Linda University in 1992 began working in an outpatient orthopedic setting which also included UE rehabilitation. His interest in hand therapy grew and he pursued an opportunity to work with a Certified Hand Therapist who contributed to his personal and professional growth. He pursued his studies in Occupational Therapy with an emphasis on upper extremity rehabilitation. He grew and developed his skills while working for Centre’ for Hand Therapy Inc. (CHT) In his time with CHT he mentored new therapists, supports staff and aides, and was given management responsibilities. In 2004 he received his hand therapy and physical agent modality certification. Formerly a gold medalist tumbler in sports-acrobatics advanced division he is no stranger to sports and athlete rehabilitation which include Baseball, Soccer, tennis and racquetball. David now brings his strong clinical skills, diverse therapy background and bilingual abilities to the Central Coast. He enjoys architecture, racquetball, spending time with his wife and enjoying the great outdoors.

Karma Sage-Johnson received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Slippery Rock University and is a Board Certified Sports Specialist. In addition, she is a Credentialed Performance Enhancement Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and has completed the Stott Mat Pilates Training. Karma’s past experiences have emphasized sports and orthopedic rehabilitation of high school, collegiate and professional athletes. Karma’s areas of interest and expertise include lower extremity rehabilitation and mechanics assessment with an emphasis on the knee and foot/ankle complex.

When she is not working, Karma enjoys spending time with her husband and son at the beach and watching football and basketball.
