Overview

Physical Therapy is a health profession developed to help people with coordination, mobility, strengthening, pain management and endurance. The ultimate goal of physical therapy is to restore the patient to their previous level of function.
In children that goal may differ slightly as children may not have reached developmental milestones that are appropriate for their age. Pediatric physical therapy involves both teaching skills for the first time and helping children get back to or reaching their maximum potential. Play is the primary tool used to motivate children to participate. Pediatric physical therapy is a specialty area which requires a therapist with experience and knowledge.

Pediatric Conditions which may require treatment include (but not limited to):

  • Weight management/obesity
  • Developmental delay/prematurity
  • Hypotonia/hypertonia
  • Lack of coordination/strength
  • Balance deficits
  • Muscle Disease
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Orthopedic Conditions
  • Arthritic Conditions
  • Torticollis

Techniques used in pediatric physical therapy include:

  • Gait/Mobility training
  • Strength/endurance training
  • Orthotics/bracing
  • Developmental training
  • Modalities (ie: heat packs, ice packs, ultrasound)

NOTE: A physician referral is required to access our services. Please contact your doctor for a referral to San Luis Sports Therapy and Orthopedic Rehabilitation.
